The Ten Thousand Doors of January (Alix E. Harrow)

Full transparency here, I'm probably the worst book club member in the world. Knowing that, I still chose to participate in one and this was the book that was chosen. Honestly, I'm terrible at book clubs because, while I understand the idea might be to keep each other accountable, it ends up feeling more like pressure in which I get too stressed out by and then fall behind. I just know I don't enjoy reading on a timeline so I apologize for sucking BUT I did end up finishing this one and decided to put my thoughts online!

The Ten Thousand Doors of January is quite literally about a girl named January and the, 'ten thousand doors' she discovers. To elaborate, the girl, January Scaller, lives in the mansion of a rich man named Mr. Locke. He collects curious artifacts which are brought to him by January's father, Julian Scaller. Julian travels around the world to find these artifacts which means he is gone often and results in a very distant relationship between him and January. Initially, the book does not touch on the Scallers' ethnicity but it is abundantly clear that January is an outsider who, because of Mr. Locke's rich white man privileges, gets to live comfortably. However, because her skin color is very much different, she's often stared at or excluded for not quite belonging. Her loneliness in Mr. Locke's house causes her to develop a sense of curiosity which leads to the discovery of 'doors' that she later understands are thresholds to other worlds. These worlds unexpectedly become her refuge as a series of events cause everything she has known to be called into question. Her father is presumed dead, Mr. Locke turns out to be more of a stranger to January and she finds herself on the run. I'm not doing this book justice but what unfolds is a wonderful love story. It definitely takes going through adventure, vengeance and heartache to recognize it as a love story but a wonderful experience nonetheless.

I haven't read a YA (young adult) fiction book in a long time and I'm glad I started with this one because it's beautifully, descriptively written. Reading this, I felt like a kid again. I clung onto every word wishing for January's safety. Somewhere online I saw this book described as a coming-of-age story and I think that's a great way to sum it up. I enjoyed the way this book wasn't cheesy either. It seems like it could be very easy to make stories with magic doors leading to other worlds come across as childish but I found this creatively appealing. This was a sweet, consuming book and I highly recommend it!

Transparencia total aquí, probablemente soy la peor miembra del club de lectura en el mundo. Sabiendo eso, elegí participar en uno y este fue el libro que ellas eligieron. Honestamente, soy terrible en los clubes de lectura porque, entiendo que la idea podría ser hacernos responsables, termino sintiéndome con más presión en la que me estreso demasiado y luego me quedo atrás. Solo sé que no disfruto leer con una fecha limitada, así que me disculpo por ser la peor, ¡PERO terminé este libro y decidí poner mis pensamientos en línea!

Las diez mil puertas de enero trata, literalmente, de una niña llamada enero y las "diez mil puertas" que descubre. Para dar más detalles, la niña, January Scaller, vive en la mansión de un hombre rico llamado Sr. Locke. El colecciona artefactos curiosos que le trae el padre de January, Julian Scaller. Julian viaja por todo el mundo para encontrar estos artefactos, lo que significa que viaja mucho y resulta en una relación muy distante entre él y January. Inicialmente, el libro no toca la etnia de los Scallers, pero está muy claro que January es una extranjera que, debido a los privilegios del hombre blanco rico de Locke, puede vivir cómodamente. Se presume que su padre está muerto, el Sr. Locke resulta ser más un extraño para January y ella se encuentra huyendo. No le estoy haciendo justicia a este libro, pero lo que se desarrolla es una maravillosa historia de amor. Definitivamente se necesita pasar por la aventura, la venganza y el dolor para reconocerla como una historia de amor, pero una experiencia maravillosa, no obstante.

No he leído un libro de ficción para jóvenes adultos en mucho tiempo y me alegro de haber comenzado con este porque está escrito de manera hermosa y descriptiva. Al leer esto, me sentí de nuevo como una niña. Me aferré a cada palabra deseando la seguridad de January. En algún lugar en línea vi este libro descrito como una historia de mayoría de edad y creo que es una excelente manera de resumirlo. Disfruté la forma en que este libro tampoco era infantil. Parece que podría ser muy fácil hacer que las historias con puertas mágicas que conducen a otros mundos parezcan infantiles, pero esto me pareció creativamente atractivo. Este fue un libro dulce y absorbente, ¡y lo recomiendo mucho!
